Help me with my accordion 1 year ago #6070

Hello, I am a musician, but new to the accordion and to this site. I recently purchased an old/small Galanti from a guy on CraigsList. He said that a key was broken, I opened it up and a pad had fallen of one of the treble levers. However, i notice that the accordion sounds without any bass or treble keys being pressed. Basically, i can compress or extend the accordion and it plays a chord. This is incorrect behavior, right? An accordion should only sound while air is moving through the accordion AND a key is being pressed. Correct?

Any tips would be appreciated.
thanks.

Correct! From your description of the chord sounding it seems you need to replace or repair a bass pad. Usually the only way to fix this is to remove the bass section and that`s a job for someone who is experienced at accordion repair.I consider it the costliest of all repairs because of the complexity of the bass machine.
Hopefully it`s just a stuck bass button or something simpler.

You really need to find out whether it`s the bass pad(s) or a treble pad (s) causing the sound . Repair/replace or place tape across the openings where the treble pad(s) are loose or missing. It might help you determine which side is leaking.
The treble pads are right in the open and an easy fix.

you said a pad was off on the g clef side, yes that will make a note play when its not being played fer sure, very easy to fix unless you have a double tone chamber box, then ikts gonna be hard cuz you will have to remove all the keys to get at that if its a valve in the tone chamber, and if the drone is comming from the bass side, then real problem cuz the entire bass mecanism has to be removed to just see the bass pad valves, and oh yes all those bass botton vales-rods, they only fit in 1 place only, no excepetions, same as the g clef side as those keys also fit in only 1 location, if you its as you say and if you have to remove the key to get at the valve pad,, just make sure you tape a numbers on all of them if you have to remove them, as ikf you don,t you will have a jigsaw puzzle to figure out,and if its the bass side, have a pro acc repair man do that, but it does sound from what you said a g clef pad, if its not a double tone chamber box, you can put the valve - pad back on very easy with a lil bit of duco cement or reg acc bees wax.
